Walt Disney World has a ghost.
For nearly two decades, River Country sat abandoned, rotting, and gradually being reclaimed by Florida's wilderness. The lights came on automatically every night. The closing theme played into the empty air long after the last guests had gone. Nobody explained why. Nobody cleaned it up. The fence went up. The signs went out: "Sorry, River Country is closed."
When River Country closed for its annual winter refurbishment on November 2, 2001, it just... didn't reopen. Disney stayed quiet for years. In 2005, they officially confirmed it wasn't coming back. And from the ferry to Fort Wilderness, you could still see the slides.
The Abandoned Since 2001 tee is for the Disney adults who know this story. Who've watched the urban explorer footage. Who felt something weird and specific the first time they heard the closing theme playing into an empty park.
